Gasparilla 2017: Who Scored the Booty and Who Walked the Plank

Tampa Bay Mayor Bob Buckhorn hands over the keys to a bunch of scurvy dogs.

Tampa Bay was recently invaded by pirates during the Gasparilla Pirate Festival, the third largest parade in the nation. In fact, the annual festival brings in an average of $23 million to the Tampa Bay economy. This presents a great opportunity for local businesses to bring in revenue.
I ran a report using the Scraawl analytic platform to discover who took best advantage of Gasparilla 2017 on Twitter. Later in this blog I’ll share insight into what made the top accounts so successful, along with the blunders of those less successful accounts. Let’s start on a high note: here are the top 10 brands that used Twitter effectively during Gasparilla: (more…)

In the gym, the saying goes “never skip leg day” and the same could be said about social media. Tampa Bay fitness brands are hulking out on Instagram, while approaching Twitter like a newbie the day after New Year’s. The American Council on Exercise reports that most brands set up social media accounts only to update sporadically, overshare, and neglect engagement with their audience. It seems the industry is confused about how to effectively use Twitter – and it’s hurting their marketing efforts. On the bright side, fitness brands in Tampa Bay are thriving on Instagram. Here are the top 10 fitness brands, and what they can teach you about using Instagram!

Behind the Chair: Which Tampa Bay Salons Made the Cut

A few weeks ago, I did a piece on how the city of Tampa was struggling with its Instagram account, and it is a struggle that many businesses share. The Tampa Bay beauty industry, however, has embraced Instagram with great success; hair salons specifically are doing exceptionally well. As New Year’s resolutions are in full-swing, it’s an opportune time for local vanity-centric businesses to target those creating their #NewYearNewMe look.

Personally, whenever I need a haircut I just Google Map the nearest Supercuts, much to the horror of my fiancé. Recently, she wanted to try something new with her hair and went to Instagram for inspiration. Confused, I asked why she didn’t just look up Yelp reviews. She pointed out that while Yelp reviews can be reliable, pictures add to the allure of a salon.  (more…)

Who Scored and Who Fumbled: Tampa Businesses Struggle to Capitalize on the College Football National Championship on Twitter

Hosting the College Football Playoff National Championship is an honor for any city; and it can be lucrative as well.  Tampa looked to bring in close to $300 million to its economy. These high profile games provide a great opportunity for local businesses.

One simple way to tap into the financial potential of the event was through social media.  So why didn’t more local businesses capitalize on it?

Marketing and advertising used to be a lot harder (not to mention expensive).  The rise of social media has changed that, and made it possible even for smaller businesses to taste some of that $300 million with a well-executed marketing campaign.  Sadly, most Tampa Bay businesses did not demonstrate an understanding of how to do this and many didn’t even make an attempt to.  Even local sports bars struggled with their social media efforts.  After running a Scraawl  Brand Monitoring Report on 10 of the most popular sports bars in the Bay area, it became very clear who was investing in social media marketing…. and those who didn’t even take the field. Hey, Where the Party At: Tampa’s Top 3 New Year’s Eve Parties According to Twitter Analysis

12017 couldn’t get here soon enough. Seriously, this past year was so bad that someone started a GoFundMe page trying to save Betty White from 2016. What better way to put 2016 behind us than ushering in the new year with a bang, and I am one who loves to go all-out on NYE (last year one lady saw me and said to her husband, “see, that is how you are supposed to dress for New Years”).  This year I wanted to try something different. I spent one New Year’s Eve watching the pineapple drop in Sarasota, and last year I had a blast at St. Petersburg’s First Night. This year I wanted to hit up Tampa, and of course being the social media nerd that I am, I wanted to see which party has been successfully creating the most hype. So, I conducted a brand monitoring report using Scraawl and am excited to announce the countdown of the top 3 New Year’s Eve parties in Tampa according to the analytics. (more…)

Social Media Rock Stars: Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Tampa Drops the Mic on all Bay Area Hotels

hr1It’s officially winter, which means every family member up north comes down to visit me.   At first I put them up in my apartment, but not this year; I’m done with that nonsense.  The thing is, they all have different styles and tastes; and I want to find the perfect place for them.  Hotel rating systems like Yelp are good and all for overall quality, but not about what makes a particular hotel unique.  Social media is a great avenue to share experiences, media and paint a picture of what it might be like to stay at a particular hotel.  However, when I ran a Scraawl social media report on the hotels in the area, only one hotel stood out from the crowd; Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Tampa(more…)

Forget the 12 Days of Christmas, This Year Give 12 Months of Christmas with a Box Subscription!

1-first-pic-boxOver the past few years, I’ve noticed a growing trend in my Facebook feed; friends posting about their subscription boxes.  Each month they would share unique treasures contained within which encouraged my jealousy.  The subscription box seemed like the perfect gift for those who are the hardest to shop for on our Christmas lists.  It’s more personal than a gift card, and keeps giving them Christmas joy the entire year.

This year I wanted to get a close friend a subscription.  There is already a list of the top 8 box subscriptions; but like a good consumer I wanted to find out from other people about their experiences.

Which City had the best holiday tree picture on Instagram in 2016; Tampa or St. Petersburg?

by John M Kraps II

Holiday lights not only are pretty to the eye, but they are a source of pride and competition for many Americans.

I remember when I was a kid, there were these two houses on my street engaged in a holiday light “cold war” each year, which would have put Clark Griswold to shame.

Eventually, it became such a big deal that it was covered by a regional news station.  Which of course brought in more looky-loo’s and fanned the flames of what was already an out-of-control visual explosion of holiday cheer.

To settle the debate we would hold a neighborhood-wide poll to determine who won that year.  So, I consider myself an expert on holiday decorations.
